Celebrate World Oceans Month with Educational Activities at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort

RELEASE NUMBER 44|18

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Two free educational opportunities will be featured at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort Saturday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, and open to the public.

Outrigger’s quarterly O Ke Kai Series, “Navigating the Way” will feature stories, unique artifacts and tools as well as hands-on canoe building demonstrations as part of Outrigger’s steadfast partnership with Polynesian Voyaging Society; and in conjunction with World Oceans Month (June), “OZONE” Fun Day will educate and engage the keiki (kids) in activities geared toward ocean health.

The O Ke Kai Series supports the continuing efforts of the friends of Hōkūleʻa and Hawai`iloa to ensure traditional Hawaiian canoe building and restoration skills are passed on to future generations. Since the double-hull canoe Hōkūleʻa completed its historic Worldwide Voyage of 47,000 nautical miles to 85 ports and 26 nations using only the stars, wind and waves – the awareness of and fascination for traditional navigation has grown exponentially. Additional dates in the series are Sept. 15 and Nov. 17, 2018.

For our younger friends, interactive activities will teach about ocean health and its importance. OZONE or Outrigger’s ZONE is an action plan that charts a clear course for each of our resorts to make a positive impact in helping to save and protect coral reefs and ultimately the wellness of waters around the world. Outrigger is proud to educate and encourage for the betterment of the communities in which we all work and play.
