One day, I took a trip with my friend Sharon to the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, about a two-hour drive from Suva — there, the reef had been damaged by repeated storms and polluted runoff from a nearby stream, but with the help of a Japanese aid organization, the hotel built coral gardens that its guests help maintain.
