Waikiki’s Retail Boom

In the last decade, following the redevelopment of Outrigger’s Waikiki Beach Walk and the renovation of Royal Hawaiian Center, a second wave of revival injected billions of dollars of investment into Waikiki and put a new face along retail’s so-called 50-yard line along Kalakaua Avenue.

Outrigger Hospitality Group tore down a number of aging buildings along Lewers Street makai of Kalakaua Avenue and replaced them with a hotel-retail-dining complex with a wide walkway and plaza that opened in early 2007.

Barbara Campbell, vice president of retail leasing and property management at Outrigger Hospitality Group, noted that the project is the only major street in Waikiki that runs mauka to makai, within walking distance of a “critical mass of hotels,” including the Sheraton Waikiki and The Royal Hawaiian on one side, the Outrigger-managed Embassy Suites Waikiki by Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk and the Trump International Hotel Waikiki on another, and the Halekulani and Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort on the ocean.
