Finalists to perform at the 2013 Made in Hawaii Festival, with the winner receiving a month-long gig at Kani Ka Pila Grille

WAIKIKI,HONOLULU,OAHU – Kani Ka Pila Grille at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach is pleased to announce its annual talent search has begun and invites emerging island musicians to be part of this year’s competition. Entries are being accepted now through July 16, with the finals to be held at the Made in Hawaii Festival at the Neal Blaisdell Center’s Pikake Room on Saturday, August 17, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Traditional and contemporary Hawaiian musicians are encouraged to enter the talent search by submitting a music sample on DVD or by providing a link to an online performance. Submissions can be emailed to luana.maitland@outrigger.com or mailed to Luana Maitland, Kani Ka Pila Grille, c/o Outrigger Reef on the Beach, 2169 Kalia Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96815. All entries must be received by July 16, 2013, and must include:

  • artist or group name
  • artist/group photo
  • contact person
  • email address
  • phone number

The winning artist or group will receive a one-month paid contract to be the Kani Ka Pila Grille featured artists/group for the four Thursdays during the month of September 2013 (Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26). The prize also includes studio time at the Honolulu Community College’s Mike Curb MELE (The Music & Entertainment Learning Experience) Studios, which includes tracking and mixing sessions.

Five finalists will be selected and announced on July 26, 2013. These artists will then be invited to perform live at this year’s Made in Hawaii Festival in front of a panel of distinguished judges that will include:

  • Cyril Pahinui, Grammy-nominated and Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning slack key guitar master
  • Keala Chock, former program coordinator for the MELE program and current dean of communication and services at Honolulu Community College
  • Jason Genegabus, entertainment/online editor at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and HonoluluPulse.com
  • Luana Maitland, events and activities manager at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach and music director at Kani Ka Pila Grille

“It’s such an honor and privilege to be able to showcase Hawaii’s multifaceted artists through our annual Kani Ka Pila Grille Talent Search,” said Luana Maitland. “We’re especially proud of Kamakakehau Fernandez, our 2012 talent search winner, who won the Extended Play of the Year category for his album ‘Wahi Mahalo’ at this year’s Na Hoku Hanohano Award.”

Every night of the week from 6 to 9 p.m., some of the islands most notable Hawaiian musicians take the stage at Kani Ka Pila Grille. Headliners include Cyril Pahinui Weldon Kekauoha, Kawika Kahiapo, Sean Naauao, Kaukahi, Manoa DNA and a revolving selection of other award-winning island artists.
