WAIKIKI, HONOLULU, HAWAII– The founders of Outrigger Enterprises Group, Roy and Estelle Kelley, were recognized as Hawaii’s Most Influential Business People of the last 50 years by Pacific Business News (PBN) at the publication’s 50th Anniversary Gala held on September 26, 2013. The Kelleys, represented by their family, including daughters Jean Rolles and Pat Kelley, were honored for bringing the dream of a vacation in paradise within the reach of the middle-class traveler, forever changing the face of Hawaii’s visitor industry. The event also recognized Outrigger Enterprises Group as one of Hawaii’s 25 most influential businesses of the last 50 years.

When accepting the award, daughter Jean Rolles said, “This esteemed recognition is one that we are proud to accept on behalf of Roy and Estelle. While the company has since expanded throughout Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific and Oceania regions, my parents would be proud to know that the company has remained true to the core values they instilled—treating each and every employee like a member of our `ohana, our family, and working together in harmony with the culture and environment of the places where we do business.”

More than 66 years ago, Roy and Estelle began the Outrigger story by constructing and renting a six-room apartment building in Waikiki. More apartment buildings soon followed; and in 1947, Roy built his first hotel, the Islander Hotel. Over the next few decades, Outrigger continued to bring novelty and comfort to Waikiki, opening the Ala Wai Terrace Hotel-Apartments, the Edgewater Hotel, the Reef Hotel, the Coral Seas, the Reef Lanais, and many more.

Their entrepreneurial spirit and true island hospitality set the foundation for the Kelleys to create what is now one of the fastest growing privately-held leisure lodging and hospitality companies in Hawaii, Asia, Oceania, and now the Indian Ocean. Worldwide, the company has 4,200 employees and operates or has under development 45 properties with close to 11,000 hotel rooms located in Hawaii, Australia, Guam, Fiji, Bali, Thailand, Mauritius, Vietnam, and Hainan Island, China.
