LONDON – OUTRIGGER Koh Samui Beach Resort in Thailand won the ‘Best Commercial Renovation/Redevelopment Award’ at the annual Asia Pacific Property Awards on May 30, 2024 in Bangkok.
The honor recognizes the exceptional vision and execution of OUTRIGGER’S design consultants, Bangkok-based Santhaya & Associates (S+A) – who elegantly redefined the interior – and PL Design, who infused a tropical colonial feel to the exteriors and landscaping.
“In keeping with OUTRIGGER’s brand DNA as a premier beachfront destination for families, Santhaya & Associates and PL Design beautifully reimagined and enhanced the interior design and public spaces of the resort,” said Leah Matters, general manager of OUTRIGGER Koh Samui Beach Resort.
Originally blanketed with coconut plantations, Koh Samui has a longstanding relationship with this versatile fruit. Locals used every part of the coconut tree for food and drink, as well as building, weaving and crafting. Echoes of its history can be seen throughout the property, providing a unique sense of place for the resort.
Set on the pristine shores of Lamai Beach, the resort features 146 beautifully crafted rooms and elegant suites, all with a private balcony, French balcony or garden terrace. There are a selection of restaurants and bars for families to enjoy swimming and dining poolside, a Coral Kids Club, game room, Voyager 47 Club Lounge, fitness center, three massage salas and four swimming pools.
“The renovation focused on interior and landscape improvements to upgrade the hotel to the five-star rating of the OUTRIGGER brand within a carefully managed budget,” said Faun Israsena, a Dutch/Thai architect from the award-winning international design firm, S+A. “We focused on delivering quality facilities for children and families – a core target market of OUTRIGGER.”
Around the resort, elements such as colorful murals, palm leaf stencils, rope details, surf and canoe photography evoke OUTRIGGER’S Hawaiian origins.
PL Design added new swimming pools, including one with a children’s waterslide to introduce the Edgewater Family Beach Club and Bar. The tropical colonial feel was enhanced by manicured hedges, and contrasting tropical foliage such as hibiscus, heliconia, canna and frangipani were used to great effect around the resort.
“At the same time, a more playful approach reflecting the OUTRIGGER brand with bamboo shade structures, waterspouts, coconuts, and white sand was used for the Edgewater Beach Club,” said Natalie Schneider, project director at PL Design.
