HONOLULU – In a powerful union of love, heritage and hospitality, Kahawai Chapel officially opened its doors on June 1, 2025, at the OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. A collaborative effort between Tsukaki Lognote Hawaii Ltd. and OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels, the stunning oceanfront chapel is poised to become a cornerstone of destination weddings in Hawai‘i – honoring local culture and sharing the timeless spirit of aloha.
Set at the westernmost edge of world-renowned Waikīkī Beach, Kahawai Chapel is named for the flowing waters that once nourished Kawehewehe, a sacred healing sea once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. With this reverent sense of place at its heart, the venue blends modern elegance with traditional Hawaiian values, inviting couples and their families to experience an “Aloha Ceremony” that is not only memorable, but meaningful.
“With its location above the freshwater springs of Kawehewehe and its view of the vast Pacific, Kahawai Chapel is more than a wedding venue – it’s a spiritual connection to Hawai‘i’s living history,” said Luana Maitland, Area Director of Cultural Experiences. “The name Kahawai, meaning ‘stream’ in Hawaiian, evokes the life-giving flow of water and spirit that weaves through every ceremony here.”
The interior design of Kahawai Chapel is a reflection of OUTRIGGER’s brand values – authenticity, connection and cultural stewardship. Renovated by local firms MKC Hawaii and G70 Design, the space spans more than 4,000 square feet and features a pure white wooden ceiling and walls that direct the eye, and the heart, toward the endless blue horizon.
The wedding aisle itself is a design statement, symbolizing a stream’s journey to the ocean, changing hue step by step. Above, a sculptural chandelier in the form of an outrigger canoe pays tribute to the voyaging traditions of Polynesia and the lifelong partnership symbolized by hull and outrigger.
Guests are treated not as spectators, but as family, ‘ohana, throughout the ceremony and reception experience. The dedicated guest lounge offers sweeping views of Waikīkī’s shoreline and calming interiors, where the veil ceremony takes place and post-ceremony “Lino Hour” allows couples and guests to reflect, connect and celebrate together.
The Kahawai Chapel’s “Aloha Ceremony” is a moving ritual led by a Kahu (Hawaiian officiant), rooted in the values of love, unity, honesty and patience. Chants, guitar melodies and the Ti leaf lei binding ceremony bring deep cultural symbolism to each wedding, ensuring that every couple leaves with more than photographs, they carry the mana (spiritual power) of Hawai‘i with them.
“Our vision was to create a space that not only celebrates love but also honors Hawaiian heritage,” said Saito Kazuhiro, President of Tsukaki Lognote Hawaii Ltd. “Kahawai Chapel is a gift of culture, ceremony and place to those who seek something beyond a destination wedding – it is a destination of meaning.”
The opening of Kahawai Chapel marks a significant addition to the OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort’s portfolio, aligning with the property’s goal to lead in cultural hospitality and romance travel.
This initiative is also a reaffirmation of OUTRIGGER’s long-standing commitment to preserving and sharing Hawaiian traditions. “By working hand in hand with Tsukaki Lognote Hawaii Ltd. and trusted cultural advisors, we are proud to open a space that exemplifies respectful innovation and heartfelt hospitality,” said Sean Dee, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer of OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels.
