Taimane to honor Ka‘iulani with a performance of her new song, “Pīkake Princess”
HONOLULU – The OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel will host a community gathering on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., to celebrate Princess Ka‘iulani’s 150th birthday and the one-year anniversary of its transformation from the OHANA Waikiki East into OUTRIGGER’s second craft hotel, the Waikīkī Paradise.
The evening will begin with a traditional lei draping ceremony of the Princess’ statue at Ka‘iulani Triangle Park (150 Ka‘iulani Avenue), where community organizations including The Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors/Mamakakaua, ʻAhahui Ka‘iulani, Royal Order of Kamehameha and Hale O Na Ali‘i O Hawai‘i will honor the beloved princess.
Following the ceremony, guests are invited across Ka‘iulani Avenue to the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel lobby, which will be transformed into a lush “paradise garden” by renowned florist Ocean Dreamer in tribute to the princess’s historic ʻĀinahau estate. There, Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning artist Taimane will perform her brand-new song, Pīkake Princess, which was written specifically for the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel in commemoration of Hawai‘i’s last princess. The evening will also feature the world premiere of the song’s music video, filmed on-property in September.
Before and after the performance, guests can experience a rare glimpse of Princess Ka‘iulani’s personal belongings, generously shared by Hawaiian Islands Stamp & Coin. Over 75 items, all either personally owned by Princess Kaiulani or related to her life, will be on display. These items will include rare and one of a kind pieces such as 25 original photos (including some that are personally autographed, which is very rare), as well as the Princess’s own address book, personal letters in her own handwriting, including one remarkable letter written when she was 10 years old. Also special displays will include her belt, a favorite bracelet, some of her hair, a painting she made herself, her ukulele, and more.
“Princess Ka‘iulani’s life and legacy inspire us every day,” said Kiana Beimes, General Manager of OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel. “Through this event, we celebrate her birthday and connection to Waikīkī, her passion for aloha and the rich cultural heritage she represents.”
At the heart of the celebration is the “Paradise Originals” – a collective of local artists, musicians and cultural practitioners whose work perpetuates the legacy of Princess Ka‘iulani. These creatives include ‘ukulele virtuoso Taimane, painter Jack Soren, muralist JT Ojerio (Aloha De Mele), photographer Bree Poort, cultural practitioner Marques Marzan, musician Irie Love, author Meleana Estes, entrepreneur Jonathan Rotmensch of the Gallery Waikiki and culinary storyteller Bo Tanaka of Tanaka of Tokyo. From bold artwork in every guest room to murals, music and chef-driven artistry, the Paradise Originals infuse the property with culture, ensuring that Princess Ka‘iulani’s spirit continues to inspire every guest experience.
The festivities include an intimate acoustic performance by Irie Love and a curated marketplace presented by Art + Flea, highlighting Hawai‘i’s vibrant creative community including Saumolia Puapuaga, Kainoa Creations, Uluonalani Designs, The ʻIliʻili Edit, Mahaaalo, Aloha Lei Stand and Jack Soren. The event also features beverages from Appetito and tastings from Tanaka of Tokyo for purchase.
