A Dream Comes True Thanks to Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort
RELEASE NUMBER 50|18
CORAL COAST, FIJI – A childhood dream of becoming a professional hairdresser has been realized for Mataiyasi Tuwai, winner of the Cutting-Edge Community Project organized by the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort Bebe Spa.
The 38-year-old Nahigatoka villager from Nadroga won a scholarship of more than $5,000 that will allow him to undertake a diploma in hairdressing at Fiji National University Nadi Campus and gain work experience at Outrigger Fiji Beach resort.
“Ever since growing up in the village, I always dreamed of becoming a professional hairdresser, but I had never shared this with anyone because I knew that no one would support me,”
“God has heard my prayer through this scholarship. I will be able to enhance my skills and become a professional qualified hairdresser.” Tuwai said.
Outrigger Fiji general manager Peter Hopgood said he decided to sponsor the project when he realized that it costs more than $5,000 to undertake a professional hairdressing course in Fiji.
Thirty aspiring hairdressers from villages in Sigatoka were chosen to take part in the Cutting-Edge Community Project that was organized in conjunction with EmpowHAIR Ministry owner, Dani Haddad, a professional hairdresser from Sydney, Australia, and a regular guest at Outrigger Fiji.
They were given professional hair cutting equipment valued at over $800 and a week of intense training. The group was then shortlisted to 12 finalists and after a six-month evaluation of their skills, Tuwai was declared the winner.
The second prizewinner, Akesa Kautoga, won a three-day course at Fiji National University and third prizewinner, Josinivi Vameau, a two-day course.
All 12 finalists also received a two-day bridal hair-styling course at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.
“I congratulate the team from Bebe Spa for undertaking this wonderful community project. The Cutting Edge Project is what we are all about at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, giving back to our community,” said Hopgood.
