HONOLULU – OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort will have the grand finale of its “O Ke Kai” series for the year on December 2, 2023, from 9 a.m. to noon at the resort’s A‘o Cultural Center. This event is free and open to the public, welcoming guests to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Hawai‘i.

In a gesture of commitment to preserving and passing on cultural treasures to future generations, all proceeds from this event will be donated to The Friends of Hōkūleʻa and Hawaiʻiloa. This organization has dedicated itself to ensuring the proper maintenance of iconic cultural symbols such as the Hōkūleʻa and Hawaiʻiloa. OUTRIGGER is honored to collaborate with The Friends, supporting their endeavors to safeguard these invaluable traditions. The special end-of-year series promises an engaging and educational experience for attendees, featuring:

  • Hands-on Workshops: Engage in a canoe-lashing demonstration, explore a compass navigation display and witness the artistry of canoe building and restoration.
  • Artist Talk Story: Join an insightful conversation with Kamea Hadar, the renowned artist behind the inspiring mural “I KA WA MA MUA, KA WA MA HOPE” (Through the Past is the Future).
  • Craft Cocktails: Indulge in a specially crafted cocktail by Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman, drawing inspiration from Kamea Hadar’s captivating mural.
  • Hawaiian Fishing Traditions: Umi Kai will present the time-honored traditions of Hawaiian fishing, providing a glimpse into the island’s maritime heritage.
  • Musical Performance: Enjoy a soulful musical performance by Kawika Kahiapo, adding a melodic touch to the cultural celebration.
  • Voyaging Image Raffle: Participate in a unique raffle featuring captivating voyaging images presented by artist Leohone Magno.
  • Ho‘okupu Presentation: Witness a heartfelt presentation of ho‘okupu (gift) to the Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy, symbolizing the community’s appreciation for their contributions to preserving seafaring traditions.
