CORAL COAST, FIJI – A cheque for FJ$20,000 (USD$9,500) has been presented to the Fijian government by Outrigger Enterprises Group on behalf of Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Castaway Island, Fiji, to assist in rebuilding villages devastated by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The donation was made to the Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief fund by Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort’s General Manager Peter Hopgood.

A further donation of $20,000 was made by the Coral Coast Chapter of the Fiji Hotel Association, of which Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is a member, and Peter Hopgood chairman.

Outrigger Resorts’ hosts also assisted by collecting household goods and clothing and staging a fundraising walkathon, while a Cyclone Winston Appeal in Australia, organised by Outrigger Resorts, has raised more than AUD$3,000 (USD$2,260)

The chairman of the board of Outrigger Enterprises Group, Dr. Charles Kelley, said that the Outrigger group felt very much a part of Fiji and shared the pain of those who had suffered the loss of loved ones and who had seen their homes destroyed.

“On a professional level, we regard the people of Fiji as our greatest asset. On a personal level, we see them as our dearest friends and hope that this donation provides them with some small comfort and goes some way toward helping to restore their lifestyle.

“We have no doubt that their indomitable spirit will prevail. Meanwhile, our thoughts and prayers are with the Fiji people,” Dr. Kelley said.

In thanking Outrigger for its donation, Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said that the level of devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston was unprecedented but that he was touched and encouraged to see Fijians assisting Fijians at all levels.
