RELEASE NUMBER 13|24

Free Community Event on June 8 Offers Day of Family Fun and Ocean Conservation

Līhuʻe, KauaʻiOUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels is proud to announce a strategic partnership with Ho‘omalu Ke Kai, a Kaua‘i-based nonprofit dedicated to ocean conservation and restoration. This collaboration perfectly aligns with the hospitality company’s global conservation initiative –OUTRIGGER Zone – committed to protecting and preserving the coral reefs and oceans surrounding the unique environments where it operates.

This World Ocean Day – June 8, 2024 – OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa and Hoʻomalu Ke Kai are hosting the inaugural Kauaʻi Community Cleanup and Celebration of the Ocean at Nukoliʻi Beach from 10am to 2pm.

World Ocean Day is an international event uniting efforts worldwide to conserve our ocean. With more than 70 percent of our planet covered by the ocean, which produces 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe, this day serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of preserving our oceanic ecosystems. This year’s theme, “Waves of Change: Collective Actions for the Ocean,” underscores the power of collective action. OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa and Hoʻomalu Ke Kai invite residents and visitors of Kauaʻi to join forces in collecting debris and micro-plastics from Nukoliʻi Beach fronting the resort.

In addition to the beach cleanup, attendees can explore vendor booths from ocean, nature and conservation-based organizations, enjoy food provided by on-property restaurants and be entertained by local artists. This free event offers ample parking provided by OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort, along with a variety of food options available for purchase on-site.

“With OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa opening up onto Nukoliʻi Beach, we feel a responsibility to be engaged stewards of this place,” said Frank Guarin, Resort Manager at OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa. “This beach is our backyard and we are honored to have an ongoing partnership with Hoʻomalu Ke Kai, who work diligently to protect this space for both kama‘āina and visitors.”

“We are grateful to forge a meaningful partnership with OUTRIGGER, a hospitality company that truly cares for this place and its people. Our goal is to showcase how simple it is to care for our coastlines and turn harmful marine debris into useful and beautiful new material,” said Tim Leichliter, Director of Operations at Hoʻomalu Ke Kai. “The small but mighty team at Hoʻomalu Ke Kai is truly thankful for the community support and welcomes everyone to celebrate the ocean with us on June 8.”

Furthering OUTRIGGER’s commitment to ocean and coral conservation through the OUTRIGGER Zone conservation initiative, the brand’s newest property has partnered with Ho‘omalu Ke Kai to create beach clean-up kits for public use. These kits will be unveiled at this event along with a waste diversion station for marine debris found along the beach. Marine debris collected from the event will be taken off-site to Hoʻomalu Ke Kaiʻs upcycling facility to be upcycled into building material and artwork, a project funded by County of Kauaʻi. The OUTRIGGER Zone conservation initiative serves to provide enriching experiences to guests, hosts and local communities whilst ensuring their properties actively do their part to protect our oceans and help them thrive for generations to come.

“Throughout our global destinations, OUTRIGGER is proudly launching a series of impactful initiatives for World Ocean Month this June,” said Monica Salter, VP of Global Communications & Social Responsibility at OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group. “Our collaboration with Ho‘omalu Ke Kai, a dedicated grassroots nonprofit, stands out as a key highlight. Their deep understanding of local community needs, combined with their unwavering passion, empowers them to drive remarkable and lasting positive change.”

The Kauaʻi community beach cleanup and World Ocean Day Festival is one of more than a dozen events in OUTRIGGER’s Sustainable Summer campaign to support eco-friendly products, locally sourced dining options and activities that help to preserve our precious coral reefs.
