Plus, throughout Duke’s OceanFest, the public is invited to explore a pop-up museum featuring art and photographs of Duke Kahanamoku at Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach’s Voyager Room.
“We look forward to Duke’s OceanFest all year long – not only for the fun and spirited events, but because it embodies one of Outrigger’s core values, which is to preserve and honor our cultural heritage and share Hawaii’s unique sense of place with our guests, employees and community,” said Bitsy Kelley, vice president of Corporate Communications for Outrigger Enterprises Group. “We encourage visitors and kamaaina to join us in August to help carry on the legacy of Duke Kahanamoku.”
The festivities will bring hundreds of athletes, professional and amateur, together to ‘duke’ it out in a variety of beachside competitions, including longboard surfing, stand-up paddleboard races, swimming, tandem surfing, surfboard water polo, sand volleyball and more. A highlight of the event includes the Outrigger Resorts Lifeguard Competition – including a swim relay, paddleboard relay and rescue paddle event kicking off on Wednesday, August 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. on the beach fronting Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. The event’s festivities also include a Sunrise Birthday Lei Draping ceremony at the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki on Sunday, August 24 from 7 to 8 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
In celebration of the lively annual event, Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach will draw the curtain on a special pop-up museum in the hotel’s Voyager Room in the hotel lobby, open throughout Duke’s OceanFest. In collaboration with Duke’s Waikiki and the Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, the limited-time showcase will feature photographs of Duke Kahanamoku and art by featured local artist M Field.
Duke’s OceanFest is a fundraiser for scholarships for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, a public nonprofit foundation created with the mission to financially support the development of individuals and organizations perpetuating the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku.
