World Oceans Month Celebrated with Eco-Experiences at Outrigger Fiji
RELEASE NUMBER 54|18
CORAL COAST, FIJI – Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort has celebrated World Ocean’s Month with a program of eco-experiences including coral planting as part of its OZONE conservation initiative dedicated to the maintenance of the resort’s marine environment.
Each year, World Oceans Month calls attention to the vital role the sea plays in our everyday lives and serves as a reminder for global citizens to take an active role in fighting for the sustainable future of our oceans, “the lungs of the Earth.” As a premier beachfront resort brand, Outrigger Resorts invites guests to join its global celebration during World Oceans Month and participate in numerous eco-experiences as part of its ocean conservation program, OZONE (Outrigger’s ZONE), and its ongoing effort to preserve and protect the ocean’s coral.
On June 15, Outrigger hosts, with some willing help from guests, worked on reef rehabilitation activities including the sinking of fish houses, repopulating propagation racks with new, young coral to form a coral nursery and cleaning of fish houses and clam cages.
Resort General Manager Peter Hopgood said he was proud of the commitment to the environment by the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort team.
“We are also involved in many other activities in our community where we look after the environment. One of our biggest challenges in Fiji is plastic bags,” he said, reminding guests to use the reusable tote bag they are given when checking into the resort rather than plastic bags when they went shopping.
“Over the past 12 months we have distributed over 50,000 green bags to the school children and villages in the Nadroga / Navosa province. “We have also sponsored competitions for the cleanest school and village and held poster competitions. Our war cry is – No Plastic, That’s Fantastic,” Mr. Hopgood said.
