HONOLULU – OUTRIGGER Mauritius Beach Resort recently opened a brand-new Marine Center on property, an educational space designed to deepen guests’ understanding and appreciation of the island’s rich marine environment. The innovative center underscores OUTRIGGER’s long-standing commitment to marine conservation and sustainable tourism.
The launch of the center was one of the global highlights of OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels’ impactful World Ocean Month in which more than 2,000 hosts, guests, students and community members participated in more than 40 hands-on events across the globe, from Hawaii to Mauritius. In 2025 alone, global OUTRIGGER teams:
- Produced 2,280 Genki Balls to help purify Honolulu’s Ala Wai Canal
- Planted over 14,000 mangrove and coastal plants in Fiji and Thailand
- Released 650,000 baby crabs in Koh Samui for marine repopulation
- Removed hundreds of kilograms of polluting debris from beaches and lagoons
- Opened a landmark Sculptural Coral Gene Bank at Castaway Island, Fiji
- Led cultural voyages, educational workshops and youth empowerment programs
The new Marine Center at OUTRIGGER Mauritius is a natural, permanent extension of this momentum. Located in the resort lobby, the center offers a self-guided journey through a range of interactive displays, including a 3D Ridge to Reef model, educational videos, coral growth exhibits and interpretive posters.
The space brings the marine ecosystem to life, helping guests visualize the fragile interconnectivity between the island’s mountains, wetlands, mangroves, lagoons and coral reefs.
Guests can also explore a unique coral table showcasing the growth of coral fragments, providing a real-time glimpse into coral restoration efforts. Continuous looping videos on a dedicated screen educate viewers on vital topics such as mangrove preservation, coral protection and other marine conservation initiatives.
“We are excited to offer our guests an opportunity to engage with and learn about the incredible marine life that surrounds Mauritius,” said Michael Gaarde-Nielsen, General Manager at OUTRIGGER Mauritius Beach Resort. “The Marine Center is designed to inspire greater awareness and stewardship for our natural environment.”
Plans are already underway to expand the Marine Center with additional exhibits and interactive features to align with OUTRIGGER’s long-term vision of environmental leadership in the industry.
Earlier this year, the team at OUTRIGGER Mauritius…
- Participated in local beach cleanups to protect local shorelines
- Hosted marine-focused educational sessions for hosts
- Planted native morning glory to help prevent beach and soil erosion
