Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort chefs strike gold

CORAL COAST, FIJI — Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort struck gold at the Fiji National Moffat Salon Culinaire 2017 awards with its chefs winning six gold medals.

Resort chefs honored included Shammer Khan, who was named Fiji Chef of the Year, and Vikash Chetty, first runner-up for Fiji Pastry Chef of the Year, while Reema Singh, the resort’s pastry demi chef de partie, scooped the Best Cake Decoration award.

It is the second time Shammer has been named Fiji Chef of the Year, having previously won the title in 2015.

Outrigger chefs won 18 medals at the fourday event, adding eight silver and four bronze to their gold medal tally.

The awards attracted some 300 competitors from all over Fiji and were presided over by three international judges.

Malamala Beach Club came second in the overall medal count while Sofitel Resort & Spa came third.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort’s executive chef, Shailesh Naidu, said the resort’s performance was a pleasing result from a very young team.As much as winning is important, I’m proud to say that we showed excellent teamwork and performed the tasks satisfactorily regardless of the medal category. I’m sure that in time, this team will perform even stronger.”

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort’s general manager, Peter Hopgood, said he was extremely proud of his kitchen brigade. “We have an outstanding trainee program led by Executive Chef Naidu and it is through this program that we are able to develop the talents and skills of our young chefs.”
